Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages and Translation
The Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages was established on June 14, 2012 by order № 178a "On the Establishment of the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages of the Faculty of Linguistics and Translation". In 2020, the department was renamed to the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages and Translation. Today the department is headed by the candidate of philological sciences, Adamova Anna Vladimirovna.

With a high level of training for the teaching staff, including graduates of leading European universities, specialists in various fields of philology (comparative historical and typological linguistics, languages of Asia, Africa, Aborigines of America and Australia and Germanic languages) and who have undergone advanced training in Germany, Austria and China, we are confident to say that the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages and Translation occupies a worthy place in the grand family of the International Humanitarian University.

The scientific and pedagogical staff of the department are constantly on the search for new methods, ways and techniques of teaching translation and foreign languages, the areas of German and Oriental languages in particular, and assist students in understanding the cultural values and ethical norms of behavior inherent in native speakers.

This year the scientific theme of the department is "The communicative approach as the optimal means of learning a foreign language in universities."

The Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages and Translation allows for the opportunity to obtain a bachelor's degree in the specializations of philologist, translator, teacher of the English and German (Chinese) languages. On the basis of acquiring this level the student may continue their studies and obtain a master's degree in the specializations of philologist, translator, teacher of the English and German (Chinese) languages. Having received adequate training at the department, some of our graduate students continue their studies in master's and postgraduate courses in leading universities in Ukraine and abroad.

The department has a speaking club with native speakers of the German language, German language courses for different levels of language training (from language level A1 to C1 for successfully passing exams and acquiring the diplomas ÖSD, TestDaF) for education, internships and employment, including scholars. There are also courses in the department for those wishing to learn Chinese.

German is the second most studied language in Ukrainian schools after English and 52% of students choose to study it as their second foreign language. To possess knowledge of the German language is both education in German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and programs for professional internships and employment. Scholars are more likely to receive grants for their research. Many students go to Germany to continue their education due to it being free for foreigners and once they graduate from university students have even more opportunities.

The department maintains relations with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Goethe-Institut in Ukraine. Associate Professor Peresada Igor Valerievich participated in a seminar for German language teachers called "Austria Day in Chisinau", organized by the Federal Ministry of Education of Austria. The seminar program covered various aspects of teaching and learning German - features of the Austrian version of the German language; computer programs for teaching German; a country study workshop dedicated to the capital of Austria - Vienna. It is also important to note that the teachers of the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages and Translation are members of the Association of Ukrainian Germanists.

Our students have a unique opportunity to continue their studies or internships in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and China. Thus, in 2015, our student Anastasia Apalyaeva pursued an internship in Germany in Nuremberg, Bavaria under the exchange program "Experten-Praktika Ukraine-Moldau in Nordbayern". The internship program was organized by the non-governmental organization Dekabristen e.V. with support from the German Ministry of Finance.

The Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages actively cooperates with the Confucius Institute in Odessa. Volunteers work at the department - native speakers. Our Chinese colleagues constantly inform students about scholarship programs to study in China, about summer and winter language camps hosted by leading universities in Beijing and Harbin. It should be noted that all accommodation costs (housing, meals, excursion program) in the country are handled by the Chinese side.

The Confucius Institute holds an international competition - the "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition - the winner of which then represents Ukraine in the finals located in Beijing among more than 50 other countries. Our Chinese colleagues have noted the high level of language training of our students. Elizaveta Ruban, who took 1st place in the semifinals and 2nd place in the finals of this competition, received a scholarship to study in China. The winners of 2016 and 2017 were our students yet again - Diana Shemet and Elizaveta Ruban. Diana also demonstrated her mastery of playing the ancient Chinese musical instrument the guzheng.
