Department of Romano-Germanic Philology and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages

The Department of Romano-Germanic Philology and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages (formerly the Department of Translation and Linguistics) at the School of Linguistics and Translation was one of the first departments at the International Humanitarian University in 2003, headed by Doctor of Philology, Professor Olena Mykhailivna Obraztsova.

Since 2023, the department has been headed by Doctor of Philology, Professor Nataliia Mykolaivna Shkvorchenko.

The Department of Romance and Germanic Philology and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages as a graduate department provides educational and theoretical training for philologists, as well as conducts educational and scientific work with students of the faculty.

Today, the faculty of the department includes two Doctors of Philology and Pedagogy, a professor, nine Candidates of Philology and Pedagogy, associate professors, senior lecturers, and four lecturers.

The Department is a member of the Ukrainian Union of Translators, the Ukrainian Union of Higher Education Germanists, the Ukrainian Union of English Language Teachers, and the Association of Teachers and Philologists (Odesa).

The academic staff of the Department provides teaching of academic disciplines in English, French, Ukrainian and Latin languages, literature and methods of teaching foreign languages. The main disciplines of professional training of future bachelors and masters include: a practical course of the main foreign language (English; French); practical courses of interpretation and translation from the main and second foreign languages (English, French), including: literary translation, translation in the field of business, tourism, law, medicine, scientific and technical translation and translation of socio-political texts, etc.

The Department carries out scientific, educational, methodological, translation and organizational activities. The department's faculty members actively work as translators, providing translation services for international meetings, conferences, and forums; their works are published in foreign central and regional publications.

In addition, the department's staff is constantly improving their professional skills and language competence: they undergo internships abroad, participate in the preparation and conduct of scientific and methodological seminars, international conferences, and their research results are reflected in numerous publications, articles, abstracts, methodological manuals, and textbooks.

The teaching staff of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology and Foreign Language Teaching Methods does not rest on its laurels and continues its research in the pedagogical and scientific field, following the trends of world science, and is always open to new scientific acquaintances, cooperation and experiments.
